Literature Text

No matter where she came from, what she did, or how long she was swimming or bathing, she always smelled like smoke. It wasn’t the bitter, pungent odor of tobacco smoke, no he couldn’t stand the smell and neither could she. It was more of a woody smoke. Walnut, perhaps. She did like peeling them herself and he’d never seen the shells end up anywhere.
When he held her at night, close to his body, and smelled her hair, there was the smell. It lingered in her hair, on her skin, on her clothing. It seemed to seep into every crevice it could so it seemed to be her natural smell. It was only a little bitter, as all burnt smells are apt to be, but there was an underlying smell to it that made it somewhat pleasant. At night he could take in the biter smell and be surrounded by it. He’d hold her tighter, she’d hold him in her sleep, and he’d drift off with the smell of burning walnut in his mind and in the air.
In the morning she’d eat her walnuts, he’d go and prepare for the day, and by the time he returned she’d be gone or just coming back in, and the smell would trail after her as if attracted to her body.
The only thing that didn't reek of smoke was her kiss, there was no bitterness there. No pungent odor to push him back, no underlying smell to counterbalance the bitterness that did not exist. Her kisses would taste of walnuts, sometimes, other times it would taste of fruit, cool and sweet.
And he relished those kisses, the gem in the smoke, the fiery phoenix among the grey ashes, yet the smoke and ashes were what made his beloved who she was.
And he loved her for all she was.
So I was shuffling through some old writing and I found this. Since it'll be a while before I upload anything new, figured I'd give you some writing.

I burn walnuts when the night gets cold sometimes, so I wrote it while smelling walnut smoke.

I don't actually know who these are. If it applies to you, Mr/Ms walnut burner, then you're welcome to pretend this is written about you.
